Your manual for finding your way, and a first look at what you could become

Stuck? Nowhere to go? Down on your luck? Good! Start with Sales.

The ladder is real, and the first rung is one phone call.

Nobody is too far behind, too young or too lost to start climbing. Every day you spend drifting is a day somebody else spends dialing. Pick up the phone, knock on the door and take your first step toward a life you build yourself. You need no permission, no degree and no plan. You need the next call, and you need it today. I will show you how.

Tap a number to dial it

What is this wheel?

It is a rotary phone. Before touch screens, people dialed by hand, one digit at a time:

  1. Put a finger in the hole of the number.
  2. Pull the wheel round to the metal stop.
  3. Let go. It spins back, and the digit is sent.

Your first turn of the wheel is the hardest one. Every call or door after it gets easier, and the first one is yours.

This is for you if…

  • 1
You finished school and you have no idea what comes next.Good. A blank page is where every comeback starts. You do not need the whole plan. You need a first move, and you are holding it.
  • 2
You are broke, bored or both.Good. Hunger is the best qualification in sales. Here your effort decides what you earn, not your grades.
  • 3
You just started and nobody showed you how.You get the structure behind a winning call and a winning doorstep conversation, in plain words.
  • 4
You are scared of the first ten seconds.Good. It means you care. You train that part until it is second nature.

The two toughest schools in business

  • +
You get your verdict in seconds.A yes, a no or a "not now" lands right away. No other classroom grades you that fast.
  • +
You start on a level playing field.Nobody checks your CV at a door or on a call. You start at zero like everyone else, and the persistent win.
  • +
You keep the skill for life.Talking to strangers, hearing "no" and going again is the one thing nobody can take away from you.

What you get in your inbox

  1. Write one sentence before every callDecide what the other person should decide by the end. Cannot finish the sentence? You are not ready to dial.
  2. The honest openerSay who you are and why you are calling. Then stop talking. Silence is a weapon.
  3. Follow-ups that earn a replyWhen to wait for something new to say, and when to follow up anyway.
  4. Make "no" easy to sayPeople who ghost you are rarely rude. They are avoiding an awkward answer, and you can fix that.
  5. Leave a voicemail in under 20 secondsYour name, your number, one reason to call you back.
  6. Choose quality over volumeAim every call at the right people. More calls to the right people beat more calls to everyone.

“I block the first two hours of every working day for calls. Email waits until they are done, no matter how I feel that morning.”The rule everything else is built on

Timo, black and white portrait
Timo, Berlin.

I did not start at the bottom. I started with no map.

I was destined for the safe path. Maybe you were too, and you heard it often enough: just get your act together.

I was understimulated and misunderstood, left to figure it out alone.

So I tried to be sensible. I studied business administration and planned to become an accountant. And I said yes to everything: I took the boss role in a student consulting group, unpaid, hoping it would pay off someday. It rarely did. Saying yes to everything was my problem, and learning to pick my battles was the challenge.

Then I sold used cars. Think Al Bundy, with a worse inventory.

My first recruiting job: eight months, no placement, €500 a month, then fired. That was my bottom. Then a small agency, a phone, and I became its top producer. Today I run my own firm and still make calls every working day.

I’m telling you this because my CV looks like hell. No straight line, no big names, a firing, used cars. And it still led here, because I picked up the phone.

You do not need a perfect start. You need to start, and you can start today.
